One of our favorite side dishes is hot sauerkraut, delicious served with pork or bockwurst  - a mild German sausage. You can also make a sandwich with toasted or grilled dark rye bread, melted Jack, havarti, or Muenster cheese, the sauerkraut, and avocado.

Grapefruit and avocado are one of those natural food pairings, like lamb and mint, or dark chocolate and raspberries. They just taste good together. They are perfect for a summer salad when avocados are relatively cheap and the grapefruit from our tree are finally ripe. My friend  uses homemade plum jam to make a sweet mayo dressing for this simple salad. We usually serve it on some lettuce, but I forgot to this time, and it isn't really necessary.

The combination of cucumber, mint, and feta cheese is really quite lovely.

This salad looks tasty like usually !
Chinese restaurants in China don’t really have Chinese Chicken Salad on their menus, it’s a creation of Chinese-American restaurants! According to Cecilia Chiang, author of The Seventh Daughter: My Culinary Journey from Beijing to San Francisco(one of my all time favorite Chinese American cookbooks), lettuce was rare and imported in China, and "salads” referred to pickled items. But, I still love a good Chinese Chicken Salad, especially if it’s got a tangy, sweet sauce and crunchy bits of fried wonton strips.

But please, Applebee’s restaurant, can we rename your "Oriental Chicken Salad” to something more hip? Asian Chicken Salad or Chinese Chicken Salad would be much better. Oriental is such a dated word…so..19th century!

Coleslaw recipe is excellent! Recipe is so simple to make and tastes just great :)
I adore coleslaw.

Inspiration for good food can be found anywhere, even Mcdonalds, where I had a delicious chicken salad sandwich recently. The key ingredients other than chicken? Cranberries and tarragon. French tarragon is a distinctive herb, with a slight anise or licorice aroma.

Cobb salad is the quintessential American salad. Wow-awesome recipe. Classic Cobb-I like it because the salad dressing doesn't drown out the flavor of the other ingredients.

I actually love raw cauliflower and kale has gained some fans at my house in its roasted form. I’m wondering how this would taste if it were quickly sauteed and crisped up with a little olive oil. I can almost taste the roasted flavors together.

I have to say, I paused a bit on the idea of this salad. Shrimp and...watermelon? In the same bowl? Possibly ending up on my fork in the same bite? Really?
Really. It's one of those things that sounds like it might not work, but trust me, it does. It's kind of the whole sweet and salty thing that I love so much, only seafood style. The shrimp and the feta cheese are the savory salty end of this recipe, and the watermelon and fresh tomato are the sweet side.

My contribution to this week’s "fruit from trees” is a warm salad made with juicy, sweet caramelized plums… barely sauteed fresh chanterelles, crumbly blue cheese and crisp savory bacon. This was a recipe that I made two nights in a row…it was such a hit.
Chanterelles may be hard to find, but any type of mushroom would do…from sliced, meaty portabello to velvety white button mushrooms.
